Notes
This song was written on June 10th, 2008, for Mhairi Stuart. On June 12th, Alex wrote in his online diary: "Two days ago I wrote an amazing song called "Holding On", which is intensely emotional. I don't want to make a video for it because it doesn't do it justice. But it contains the line; "I could bake a chocolate cake for you with tiers up to the moon", which is probably the best line I've ever written. It's childish and idealistic and illusionary, I adore it." Alex has since said of this line that he can't sing it without smiling.
There has been much discussion of the line "I'll never be your Leo", with most assuming it to be a Titanic reference. Alex has said: "Mhairi's favourite book is called Stargirl, and it's about a boy called Leo who falls in love with a girl called Stargirl at his school, so it's a pretty personal reference."
The song previously appeared as part of a free 12-track album by Alex called Nerimania!. The album consisted mostly of ripped audio from vlogs on his YouTube channel and his now-deleted music channel 'nericoustic'.
The song features producer of Parrot Stories and DFTBA artist Tom Milsom in harmony vocals and on glockenspiel.
In early October 2009, "Holding On" was posted on The Tip Sheet, a place for music producers and scouts to seek upcoming talent.
Lyrics
A million and one thousand things are screaming in my head
And I can't seem to forget, can't stop thinking about you
I could ride across the sky in a bicycle built for two
Could you teach me how to ride, like you taught me how to feel alive?
And not a single day goes by when I don't wish for you
To watch me pause to find the words to steal your heart away
But I'll play every word back round and round to try and find
A clue you might have left behind to say you feel the same
And even if I know
I'll never be your Leo
I'll keep holding on
A hundred and three thousand ghosts are laughing in my dreams
My eyes are failing me, everywhere I look I see you
I could bake a chocolate cake for you with tiers up to the moon
Could you show me how it's done, like you showed me how to fall in love?
You'll never see that I'm the one who never left you
When you needed me to cry to 'cos your heart got broke again
So I'll play until the strings on my guitar give out,
And I'll be aching from the pain of trying to pretend
And even if I know
I'll never be your Leo
I'll keep holding on
